What is Microsoft Scout?
Scout is Microsoft’s first Autopilot agent. It is an always on personal agent that works on your files, runs commands, drives a browser and connects to Microsoft 365, acting in the background under its own Microsoft Entra identity rather than borrowing a person’s account. It is in preview through the Frontier program.
Can we use Scout today?
It is in preview through the Microsoft Frontier program and is admin gated, so IT decides who gets access. It is not yet generally available.
How is Scout different from Copilot?
Copilot assists when you ask. Scout is an autopilot: it runs in the background, acts on schedules and signals, and finishes tasks without being prompted each time.
Is it safe to let an agent act on its own?
That is the right question. Scout runs under its own Entra identity with admin controls, and Agent 365 governs it like any other agent. We start narrow and widen scope with evidence.
What does Scout cost?
Microsoft has said pricing will vary with usage and that cost guidance is coming. We track announcements and will model costs for your environment as they firm up.
How is an Autopilot agent different from a chatbot?
A chatbot waits to be asked and answers. An Autopilot agent keeps working in the background between conversations, which is a different risk profile. That is why it holds its own identity and why the governance conversation matters more than the demo.
What should we do while it is still in preview?
Get the groundwork right, because it is the same groundwork every agent needs: tidy permissions, a view of what agents already exist, and agreement on who approves new ones. None of that is wasted if you never adopt Scout.
Should we be planning around it yet?
Plan around the pattern, not the product. Background agents with their own identities are where Microsoft is heading regardless of what any one preview is called. Businesses that sort out identity and oversharing now will adopt whatever arrives faster.
