This client is a Brisbane-based medical research institute where scientists and clinicians work together to move biomedical discoveries into new treatments and patient care.
The challenge
The client needed stronger data governance and better use of Microsoft 365.
What we did
We reviewed their data loss controls in Purview and built a training plan for staff.
Weak data controls and underused Microsoft 365 left research data less protected than it should be. We tackled both together.
Why it mattered
A medical research institute holds data that carries real obligations, and their Data Loss Prevention controls did not fully align with what they needed to protect. At the same time staff were not using Microsoft 365 to anything like its potential. Those two problems compound: people work around tools they do not understand, and workarounds are where data protection tends to fail.
What we did
- Reviewed data loss prevention. Across Microsoft 365 and the Purview Compliance Portal, with recommendations specific to their data.
- Ran training discovery workshops. With business units, to find where capability was actually lacking rather than assuming.
- Built a tailored training roadmap. Shaped around what those workshops found.
- Combined the two into one strategy. Governance and capability treated as a single problem, because that is how they behave.

- Stronger data governance and lower risk of data loss.
- Better Microsoft 365 adoption, so staff use what the institute already pays for.
- Clear visibility for leaders of both data risk and staff capability.
- Resilience through ongoing training rather than a one-off fix.
